Can I ask questions about my repo?

Last updated September 26, 2026

Yes, on DiffGuardian Pro. Its Analyze Project feature answers plain-English questions about your repository, citing the real files the answer came from. Two more Pro features, Ask and Explain, let you ask about the pull request in front of you or a single selected snippet without leaving the diff.

#Ask your codebase (Analyze Project)

DiffGuardian indexes your entire repository into a local code knowledge graph. Ask a question in plain English and it answers from your actual code, citing the real files the answer came from, and draws a diagram on a canvas beside the conversation where one helps.

The first time you open Analyze Project for a repository, DiffGuardian builds its code knowledge graph — mapping symbols, callers and import edges. It runs entirely on your machine, and the chat opens as soon as the graph is ready. Later sessions reuse it.

Every answer names its sources, which can include:

  • Repository (code graph) — symbols, callers and import edges.
  • A knowledge base — your own documents or vector store, if you've attached one.
  • An MCP server — a tool you connected.

#Ask and Explain, without leaving the diff

Ask is a tab beside the diff. The pull request's diff and description are supplied as context, so you ask about the change itself; each pull request keeps its own thread.

Explain works on a single selection: highlight any code in the diff and an Explain button appears next to it. Nothing is sent anywhere until you click it — selecting code only arms the button.

Both can be switched off together from Settings → AI Settings, for a review session with no conversational AI in it at all.

#Where the question goes

To the AI backend assigned to the job: a local model, which never leaves your machine, or your own cloud provider key, sent directly from your machine to Anthropic, OpenAI, Google Gemini, or OpenRouter under your agreement with them. Never to DiffGuardian's servers.

#Limits

  • Analyze Project, Ask and Explain are all Pro. On Basic each stays visible and opens an upgrade prompt.
  • Answers come from the index of your checkout; after pulling a large branch, let the index catch up before asking about the new code.

FAQ

Are Ask, Explain and Analyze Project available on the Basic plan?

No. All three are Pro features. On Basic they stay visible and open an upgrade prompt instead.

Does asking about my codebase send my code to DiffGuardian's servers?

No. The question and the retrieved code go to a local model, which never leaves your machine, or to your own cloud provider key, sent directly from your machine to that provider. Never to DiffGuardian's servers.

What is the difference between Ask and Analyze Project?

Ask is scoped to the pull request in front of you, with the diff and description as context. Analyze Project (ask your codebase) answers from the whole repository.

Does Explain run automatically when I select code?

No. Selecting code only arms the Explain button; nothing is sent anywhere until you click it.

Can DiffGuardian draw a diagram while answering a question?

Yes. Analyze Project can draw a diagram on the canvas beside the conversation, built from the code graph, when a diagram explains the answer better than prose.
